On Tuesday (20 October), the school wanted to celebrate nature and the seasons by dedicating the whole day to autumn. The day had an apple theme, which coincided with the National Apple Day and was appropriately held in the school’s playground – an apple orchard.

The day was run as a series of workshops where the children could use their imagination and autumnal objects (conkers, feathers, dried leaves, twigs etc.) to make clothing, finery, a spider web or even design and make insects with these materials. These workshops where led by school parents of which a few are professional artists in their own right.

We invited Kathy Lee (wife of author Laurie Lee) to join us in the afternoon when the children paraded through a ceremonial willow arch dressed up in their jewelry. Ceilidh-Jo (parent and musician) has been helping the children learn songs of the season. The day would not be complete without filling the tummies – the children pressed fresh apple juice and ate apple cakes and apple crumble made by the parents.
