 Heating substances       13-1-09

My prediction

Water will steam and bubble.

Sugar will melt into treacle.

Jelly will melt into liquid.

Margarine will slide into liquid.

Chocolate will move into brown liquid

We used

Jelly

Water

Sugar

Chocolate

Margarine

Apple pie base

Pegs

Candle

Matches

What we did

Mrs Durman lit the candles and gave us water which she put in our apple pie bases. Then we held it with a peg above the flame and watched. The same process repeated for the other substances.

What happened

The water steamed and bubbled.

The sugar melted into treacle and bubbled like a volcano.

The jelly bubbled and melted.

The margarine slid and melted

The chocolate steamed, bubbled and melted.

Conclusion

I think they liquefied because of the heat.

The next day when we looked at the substances they had solidified.
