WE'LL VEG OUT IN NEW GARDEN
09:00 - 04 March 2008
Pupils from Sheepscombe School say they really deserve to win the Class of the Year 2008 competition.Green-fingered pupils in Class Two would use the money to get to grips with gardening and recycling.
Acting headteacher and teacher of Class Two, Sally Durman, said if the school wins £5,000 they would build a vegetable plot and gardening area which would encourage the pupils to be eco-friendly.
She said: "The Friends of Sheepscombe School have already started to develop a garden.
"We recently had a conservatory extension put on the back of the Year Three and Year Four classrooms.
"We are already in the process of building decking and have plans for vegetable plots and compost bins, which we would put the money towards.
"Any spare money would be used for picnic tables and permanent equipment."
Ms Durman said the money would make a really big difference to the pupils' learning.
And she said the children were very excited about the application and will be supporting it.
There are 20 children from Year Three and Year Four in Class Two.
She said: "We hope to create an outdoor learning centre.
"This would support our recent healthy schools award and work towards our application for the eco-schools award.
"The money would help pay for an area which could be used for work, play, gardening and quiet reflection.
"There will be compost bins and we hope this will encourage the children to get involved in recycling."
To win the £5,000 prize, classes must collect as many tokens as possible from The Citizen.
The tokens will be published from March 8-22 and the class which collects the most tokens per pupil will then win the cash.
Pupils have until this Friday to register their school.
