In April 2013, the government announced new funding for physical education (PE) and sport. The funding was used by schools to improve the quality and breadth of PE and sport provision. Funding has been allocated annually since then.

An increase in 2017-2018 showed the government’s commitment to PE and sport as a way to develop healthy lifestyles and improve participation and performance in sport. Schools remain free to determine how best to spend this funding in order to provide hign quality sport for their pupils.
